2020 Vision Board: Gopher Football Position Previews
7/21/2020 11:35:00 AM | Football, Athletics
New names and familiar faces fill the roster as Gopher Football gets back to work on campus. Take a peek at the season ahead with an in-depth look into every position group looking to hit the field this fall.
Quarterbacks
Quarterback. Field general. Signal-caller.
Whatever you call it, it's the most important position in the game. It's the one person who has the ball in his hands nearly every snap and the play of the quarterback is critical for a team's overall success. Minnesota has six quarterbacks on its roster and they are all capable to helping the Maroon and Gold.
Running Backs
Minnesota must replace Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks at running back this year, as both graduated after last season. Smith left Minnesota ranked second in program history with 4,122 rushing yards, while Brooks was ranked 12th with 2,290 yards.
Wide Receivers
Last season, Minnesota boasted one of the most dynamic receiving duos in the country in Rashod Bateman and Tyler Johnson. Bateman and Minnesota's receiving corps will once again operate under the guise of Matt Simon, the Maroon and Gold's uber-talented receiver coach.
Tight Ends
Music to their ears? Perhaps. Minnesota's new offensive coordinator Mike Sanford Jr., has publicly hinted at using the tight end position more in the passing game this year.
Offensive Line
When Coach Fleck arrived at Minnesota, the Gophers were running spring practice drills in 2017 when sometimes four healthy offensive lineman. Now, a little more than three years later, the Maroon and Gold are set to return all six (we'll explain) starting offensive lineman for the 2020 season.
The Secondary
Despite losing an NFL second round draft pick in unanimous All-American Antoine Winfield Jr., and an NFL seventh round draft pick in Chris Williamson, the Gophers secondary is loaded with depth coming into the 2020 season.
Linebacker
Every football team is only as good as the next man up and that was evident with linebacker position for the Gopher football team in 2019.
Defensive Line
It all starts in the trenches. The Gophers defensive line comes into the 2020 season with a mix of experience and youth to get after the quarterback and stuff the run game.
The Specialists
Our last position preview going into the 2020 season takes a look at the unsung heroes of any football team.
