Former holder and Disney Spirit Award winner will soon begin a career in financial planning
University of Minnesota placeholder Casey O'Brien recently announced his retirement from football. O'Brien, who made the announcement on social media, is a multiple-time cancer survivor and will soon start a career in financial planning.
He made headlines in 2019 when he competed at Rutgers and at home against Maryland. O'Brien successfully held three times in both games while inspiring millions.
His story of gratitude and perseverance has been told extensively, and O'Brien received the 2019 Disney Spirit Award as college football's most inspirational figure. He was named Minnesota's Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree in 2020.
O'Brien, who graduated in 3.5 years from the prestigious Carlson School of Management with a degree in finance, was named Academic All-Big Ten in 2020, 2019 and 2018 and was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2019-20 and 2018-19.
