Guard ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring
University of Minnesota junior guard Marcus Carr was named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award today. The award recognizes the top point guard in men's college basketball and the announcement was made by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
A national committee of college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in November, which has now been narrowed to 10.
Carr is one of two players from the Big Ten. The other nine candidates are Jared Butler (Baylor), McKinley Wright IV (Colorado), Marcus Zegarowski (Creighton), Scottie Barnes (Florida State), Jalen Suggs (Gonzaga), Ayo Dosunmu (Illinois), Carlik Jones (Louisville), Cade Cunningham (Oklahoma State) and Collin Gillespie (Villanova).
Carr ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring (20.9), second in assists (5.2), seventh in 3-point field goals per game (2.3) and 14th in field goal percentage (.442). He also leads the league in minutes per game (35.9).
Carr was named to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 Watch List earlier this month. He was named All-Big Ten Third Team last season after setting a school record with 207 assists in a season. He started every game and led the Big Ten in minutes played, while finishing second in the conference in assists and eighth in scoring.
