STARTING FIVE
1.
Minnesota heads to Purdue for its fifth road game of the season and first against a non-ranked opponent (Purdue is receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches polls). Minnesota previously played road games at No. 13 Illinois, No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 10 Michigan and No. 5 Iowa. The four-game road streak against ranked foes was the longest for the Gophers since the 1992-93 season when they played at No. 2 Indiana, No. 25 Michigan State, No. 18 Purdue and No. 5 Michigan. The Gophers ended that streak with a win at unranked Northwestern.

2. Saturday's game will be Minnesota's fourth game in a 21 days. The Gophers played at Iowa on Jan. 10 before hosting Michigan on Jan. 16 and Maryland on Jan. 23. Minnesota's game at Nebraska on Jan. 20 was postponed. This is a change to the start of the season when Minnesota had stretches of six games in 16 days and six games in 18 days. Minnesota next plays at Rutgers on Feb. 4. The last time Minnesota played only six games in January was 1972-73 when Bill Musselman's Gophers went 4-2 in the month with wins against Wisconsin (2x), Marquette and Michigan State. The two defeats came on the road at Iowa and Indiana. Minnesota played 10 January games in 2003-04.

3. The Gophers are ranked No. 21 in the most recent AP Poll, which was released on Monday. Minnesota has now been ranked for five straight weeks, which is tied for the 11th longest streak in school history. Minnesota entered the AP Top 25 for the first time since Dec. 4, 2017, when it was ranked No. 21 on Dec. 28, 2020. Minnesota has appeared 11 times in the AP Top 25 under head coach Richard Pitino, with five coming this season.

4. This will be the 177th all-time meeting between Minnesota and Purdue. The Boilermakers lead the all-time series 96-80, but the Gophers have won two of the last three meetings. Minnesota's last trip to Mackey Arena, where it is 25-63 all-time, was an 83-78 loss in double overtime on Jan. 2, 2020. In that game, Marcus Carr had 27 points, seven rebounds, four assists, one steal and a block in 48 minutes of play.

5. Minnesota has played eight ranked opponents this season (first eight games in Big Ten play) and was 4-4 in those games. The Gophers played only eight ranked opponents last season after facing 11 (a high in the Pinto era) in 2018-19. Minnesota faced six ranked opponents in 2017-18, five in 2016-17, six in 2015-16, six in 2014-15, and nine in 2013-14 (Pitino's first season at Minnesota).
