Minnesota Returns Home to Face Penn State

The No.13 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team returns to Maturi Pavilion for their second home meet of the season. The Gophers host the Nittany Lions at 12:00pm on Saturday, Jan. 30 and the meet will be available on BTN Plus. Â
Last Time Out
The No. 4 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team fell just short of No. 3 Michigan by a final score of 195.850 - 195.000. Freshman Mya Hooten built off her bars performance from her debut and set a new career-high. The Woodbury, Minn. native stuck her double front dismount for a 9.800. Junior Abbie Nylin made an appearance in the beam lineup and tied her career-high of 9.800 on the event.
Ona Loper had the top mark in the all-around for the Gophers with a 39.500, taking second overall. The Bluffton, S.C. native claimed a share of the vault title (9.900) and won floor for a second week in a row with a 9.925. Lexy Ramler finished third in the all-around with a 39.475. Ramler also earned a share of the vault title after scoring 9.900.
The Gophers combined for a 48.975 on bars. Ramler led the way for the Gophers with a 9.875 for third place. Loper was Minnesota's next highest finisher with a score of 9.825. Hooten and Tiarre Sales tied for ninth with a 9.800.
Ramler and Loper shared a two-way tie for the vault title, scoring a 9.900. Hooten and Maddie Quarles tied for eighth with a 9.800. Minnesota put up a team score of 49.150.
Loper won her second floor title in as many weeks with a 9.925 score. Ramler earned a 9.800 and fourth place finish. The Gophers had a 48.075 team score on the event.
Minnesota edged Michigan on beam with a score of 48.800. Ramler (9.900) and Loper (9.850) had the two best finishes to take second and fourth place. Nylin and Mary Korlin-Downs finished seventh on the leaderboard (9.800).
Gophers in the Rankings
Minnesota comes in at No. 13 overall after being ranked No. 4 last week. The Maroon and Gold is ranked ninth on beam, 11th on vault, tied for 11th on bars and tied for 30th on floor.
Loper continues to be nationally ranked in all events. She is tied for first on vault, third in the all-around, tied for fourth on floor, tied for 17th on bars and tied for 55th on beam. Lexy Ramler is fifth in the all-around and is ranked fourth on beam, tied for sixth on bars and tied for 13th on vault. Quarles comes in at No. 25 on vault. Â
Record setting Gophers
In their first meet of the season, Minnesota posted their best opening meet team score with a 197.025. This beat the record set last year at Denver when the Gophers recorded 196.475 points.
Following the first week of competition, Minnesota earned a No. 4 national ranking which tied for the highest in program history.

Scouting Penn State
The Nittany Lions rank 19th in the country on vault and 24th on floor. Penn State dropped a 195.250 - 195.100 decision against Nebraska in their last time out. Sophomore Cassidy Rushlow earned a career-high 39.475 in all-around to win her second straight all-around title. She won event titles on vault (9.875) and bars (9.925), tying a career high on bars. She also set a career high on floor (9.850). Rushlow ranks 16th in the country in all-around, 17th on bars and 29th on vault. Junior Melissa Astarita claimed her second straight floor title, collecting a career high-tying 9.925. Astarita sits 10th in the nation on floor, while Senior Erynne Allen holds 37th.
