Becomes the first Minnesota punter to earn the honor since Peter Mortell in 2013
University of Minnesota punter Mark Crawford was named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week after a standout performance in a 20-13 win at Purdue last Saturday. Crawford shared the honor with Jordan Stout of Penn State.
Crawford continually flipped the field in a rain-soaked game against the Boilermakers, as he averaged 51.3 yards on six punts. He recorded a career-long, 60-yard punt twice, which was Minnesota's longest punt since Ryan Santoso had a 61-yarder against Illinois on Oct. 21, 2017.
Crawford's six punts traveled 60, 60, 58, 46, 45 and 39 yards and three of his punts (60 yards, 60 yards and 58 yards) rank in the top 20 of longest punts in the Big Ten this season. He placed four punts inside the 15-yard line, which to Purdue starting drives on its own 2, 9, 15 and 15 yard lines.
Minnesota also allowed zero punt return yards against Purdue, which was a big reason why the Boilers, who ran 86 total plays, were limited to only 13 total points and did not score in the second half.
Crawford also executed four successful holds (two point-after attempt and field goals of 42 and 38 yards) in a driving rain.
Crawford if the first Gopher to be named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week since holder Casey O'Brien was recognized on Oct. 21, 2019. Crawford is the first Minnesota punter to receive the honor since 2013 when Peter Mortell was recognized on Nov. 4 and Nov. 11.
