No. 2 UConn Defeats Minnesota 88-58 in Opening Game of Battle 4 Atlantis

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota (3-2, 0-0 B1G) held with No. 2 UConn in the first half, but the Huskies (2-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) used a 25-point third quarter to pull away from the Gophers in the first women's Battle 4 Atlantis game on Saturday afternoon in the Bahamas. Sara Scalia led the Golden Gophers with 17 points, with 15 coming in the first half.
Three Golden Gophers finished in double figures including Deja Winters who scored nine of her 13 points in the opening quarter. Winters finished 4-of-7 from three and had a pair of rebounds in 21 minutes. Kadi Sissoko reached double figures for the second game in a row, finishing with 10 points while grabbing four rebounds.
The Huskies used a 12-0 run to begin the game, putting the Golden Gophers in a big hole off the bat. After falling behind by as much as 15 in the first quarter the Maroon and Gold clawed back with a 13-4 run at the end of the period to make it 24-18.
The second quarter was one to remember for Scalia, who scored 12-straight points for the Gophers, all from beyond the arc. By the end of Scalia's hot shooting Minnesota had pulled themselves to back within one with the score at 31-30 with 4:54 left in the half. UConn responded, scoring 16 of the next 21 points in the game to take a 12-point lead into the locker room.
In the third the Huskies put forth a shooting effort of 10-of-13 (76.9 percent) from the floor including a pair of threes to outscore Minnesota 25-8. Led by Christyn Williams' 31 points the Huskies were able to hold off Minnesota in the fourth and took the game by the score of 88-58.
As a team the Golden Gophers shot 21-of-52 (40.4 percent) as a team and knocked down 11 3-point shots at a 45.8 percent clip. Minnesota's bench outscored the Huskies 23-19 with Winters' 13 leading the way while also getting six from Caroline Strande in the fourth quarter.
Next up for Minnesota is a matchup with the loser of the South Florida-Syracuse game at 4 p.m. CT on Sunday. The game can be streamed on FloHoops and fans can also find the game on KFAN+ with Justin Gaard and Lynnette Sjoquist.
