Minnesota Clinches National Title
The University of Minnesota clinched the national title with a 22-13 win against Wisconsin in Madison.
The 1941 Gopher Football team was one of the finest this state has ever seen. In their 10th year under head coach Bernie Bierman, Minnesota compiled an undefeated 8-0 season to finish first in the Associated Press poll, giving the Gophers their second consecutive and fifth overall national title.
That season the Gophers were led by halfback Bruce Smith. The Faribault, Minnesota native took home the Heisman Trophy in 1941 for his outstanding performance and leadership. To this day, Smith is the only Golden Gopher to ever win the Heisman Trophy.
