Big Ten Recognizes Five on Defense

Boye Mafe Named Second Team All-Big Ten, Four Others Honored
The Big Ten announced all-conference performers on the defensive side of the ball today and the Gophers had five players recognized.
Boye Mafe was named Second Team All-Big Ten by the media and was a Third Team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches. He led Minnesota with six sacks and nine tackles for loss, while finishing sixth on the team with 30 tackles.
Mafe's roommate Esezi Otomewo was named Honorable Mention by both the coaches and the media. He finished the year with 27 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack.
Minnesota's top two leading tacklers – Jack Gibbens and Mariano Sori-Marin – were both named Honorable Mention. Sori-Marin was tabbed Honorable Mention by both the coaches and the media, while Gibbens received recognition from the media. Gibbens led the Gophers with 86 tackles and Sori-Marin was second with 82.
The final Gopher to be honored on defense was defensive back Tyler Nubin, as he was named Honorable Mention by the media. The lanky safety led the defense with three interceptions and was third on the team with 44 tackles.
Minnesota ended the regular season as the nation's fourth-best defense in total yards allowed, yielding only 284.8 yards per game. That was the lowest in school history since Minnesota allowed only 225.1 yards per game in 1966. The Gophers allowed only 18.25 points per game, which was the lowest in school history since 1999 when they allowed only 16.3 points per game.
The Big Ten will announce offensive selections on Wednesday.
