Hopkins is the second coach in program history to earn the honor, following Gary Wilson who did so from 2007-08.
MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota cross country head coach Sarah Hopkins has been named the Big Ten Conference Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year, as was announced by the Big Ten Monday morning.
The honor is the first of Hopkins's career and marks the third in program history, joining Gary Wilson who claimed the award twice from 2007-08.
Hopkins received the honor following the conclusion of the 2021 Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 29, where Minnesota captured both the women's individual and team titles, doing so in the same season for the first time in program history.
Megan Hasz earned the individual title for the Gophers in a time of 20:34.5, becoming the third woman in Minnesota history to do so and the second under Hopkins, who also saw M. Hasz's twin sister Bethany Hasz claim the individual crown in 2020. Alongside M. Hasz in the team title efforts were Abby Kohut-Jackson in seventh, B. Hasz in ninth, Anastasia Korzenowski in 21st and Tate Sweeney in 35th.
Also announced were the Big Ten's Sportsmanship Award honorees, of which Owen Hoeft and Jaycie Thomsen were named Minnesota's recipients.
Hopkins and the Gophers will now look ahead to the NCAA Midwest Regional meet this Friday, Nov. 7 in Iowa City, Iowa, where both the men's and women's teams will be battling for a shot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships later this month in Tallahassee, Fla.
