Minnesota Adds Sophia Romine as Transfer from Wisconsin

MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota women's soccer head coach Erin Chastain has announced the addition of transfer midfielder/forward Sophia Romine to the program's roster. Romine comes to the Gophers after playing her previous two seasons at the University of Wisconsin. 

"I chose the University of Minnesota because of the amazing staff and I fell in love with everything about the campus," Romine said. "I will have the opportunity to play for a top program with a great group of players and coaches that will push me to be the best player I can be."

After starting all 14 games a freshman during the shortened 2020-21 season Romine played 19 and started two more during the 2021 season in Madison. In 33 games at Wisconsin Romine scored once and had one assist. Her lone goal came at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium against the Gophers in a 1-1 draw. Romine also saw time in the 2021 NCAA Tournament and has played in an average of 46 minutes per game including playing 90 or more minutes three different times. 

A prep standout, Romine competed for the Michigan Hawks in the ECNL. She was the Phoenix ECNL Standout Player and the Seattle Standout Player in 2018 and was the 2019 San Diego Standout Player in the ECNL. With he rclub  She received all-academic honors all four years for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher and volunteered in her community and at soup kitchens. 

A child of Kim and Paul Romine, Sophia has three sisters in Bella, Jenna and Ava along with one brother, Josh. Her interests include golf, swimming, football, basketball, going to restaurants with friends, reffing soccer and watching movies. While studying at the University of Minnesota, Romine intends to pursue a degree in Sports Management. 

In Erin Chastain's first season as head coach the Gophers finished with eight wins, including two against 2021 NCAA Tournament teams and the most since the 2018 season. Minnesota's season ended with a ninth-place finish in the Big Ten standings. Next season the Gophers could return up to 20 student-athletes from this year's roster that was among the Big Ten's highest scoring teams in conference play.
