MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota (7-7, 0-2 B1G) was tripped up by Drake (8-3, 0-0 MVC) on Thursday afternoon in Des Moines at the Knapp Center. Minnesota got 22 from Sara Scalia, her second-straight 20+-point performance, in the loss while Jasmine Powell added 10.Â
Fouls held the Golden Gophers back early in the contest. Kadi Sissoko sat down with a pair of fouls after just a minute and 25 seconds on the floor while both teams turned the ball over seven times in the first 10 minutes of action. Minnesota got buckets from six different players in the opening quarter and still was able to lead 14-12 by the end of it.Â
The second quarter went to the host Bulldogs, scoring 17 to the Gophers 13. Drake shot 7-of-20 from the floor, utilizing the paint to score 12 of their points. On the Gophers' side it was Scalia who put in a team-high eight points in the quarter, but couldn't keep the team in front and headed into the locker room down 29-27.Â
The third quarter saw Drake shoot an efficient 80 percent from the floor on 8-of-10 shooting. Minnesota cleaned up its turnovers in the quarter, but more foul trouble in the post kept the Gophers from gaining enough momentum to take back the lead.
Minnesota came as close as two points with 7:09 left in the fourth quarter, but an 11-0 run followed shortly by another 8-0 built Drake's lead to as much as 19 before the Gophers put in a few buckets late.Â
In total the Gophers shot 41 percent from the floor on 25-of-61 shooting. The team made eight threes, six of them coming from Scalia on 12 attempts. Powell added five assists to her 10 points and turned the ball over just once.Â
Scalia's performance marks the second time in her career she has dropped 20 or more points in back-to-back games in her career. She is also the last Gopher to do so, last season when she scored 30 against Purdue (1/28/21) and 21 against Penn State (1/25/21).Â
Minnesota's 2021 calendar wraps up with a matchup with Northwestern on Dec. 31, at 1 p.m., and can be seen on the Big Ten Network. Fans can, as always, listen to Justin Gaard and Lynnette Sjoquist on KFAN+.Â
