University of Minnesota junior Amira Young is a sprinter on the Golden Gopher track & field team. A 2019 All-Big Ten honoree, Young made her NCAA Championships debut as a freshman when she finished 22nd at the national championship in the 100 meters. She holds Minnesota's program records for the indoor 200 meters and outdoor 100 meters along with ranking second in program history indoors in the 60 meters and third among all-time Gophers outdoors in the 200 meters. The Kinesiology major was a 2020 USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
To Young, Black History Month used to mean a time for America to celebrate the accomplishments of Black leaders who helped shape America, but she explained that the events of the past several months have changed her perspective. "Celebrating Black History Month means so much more to me now," Young said. "This summer, the world has seen police mistreat Black people and Black people being punished for standing up for their rights... We've accomplished so many things to help shape the culture of America today."
The Chicago native and her Gopher track & field teammates created a Black Lives Matter t-shirt they have proudly worn at competitions this season, representing their solidarity with the social justice movement. "It was important to create the shirt because we have a lot of Black men and women on the team, so we wanted to show our support to them, and also show the world our awareness of what's going on out there."
"By wearing those shirts, the message we're trying to get out is that we support everyone and we want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome to join our team and the University of Minnesota athletics," Young said.
