Wassel Named to Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award Watch List

MINNEAPOLIS - Gopher Baseball third baseman Jack Wassel has been named to the 2021 Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award Watch List, as announced by the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation. The announcement comes alongside Wassel also being tabbed as the sixth-ranked third baseman in the country in D1Baseball's preseason positional power rankings.
Introduced in 2017, the BBCSA is awarded annually to the top college hitter in the nation and is based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity. After receiving a record number of nominations for the 2021 season, the winner of the BBCSA will be announced in June and honored at a gala in the fall at the Fort Worth Club.
Over the past two seasons, Wassel has appeared in every game for Minnesota while starting 74 of 75 possible games. Last season, the Gopher third baseman broke out offensively in a major way, slashing .364/.475/.591 with two home runs, one triple, seven doubles, 16 RBI, 11 runs scored and two stolen bases.
Wassel finished the 2020 campaign ranking second in the Big Ten in walks, tied for third in doubles, fourth in hits as well as total bases and fifth in RBI. He will enter the 2021 season riding an active 11-game hitting streak and 13-game on-base streak.
As for the D1Baseball honor, Wassel's status as the preseason No. 6 third baseman in the country makes him the highest-ranked player at his position in the Big Ten. No other Big Ten third baseman cracked the preseason top 30.
The redshirt senior also excels in the classroom, representing a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
