Junior leads Minnesota in scoring and assists while playing 35 minutes per game

University of Minnesota junior guard Marcus Carr was named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team today. Carr, who was previously named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, is one of 30 individuals on the Midseason Team.

Carr ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring (19.9), second in assists (5.4) and leads the league in minutes per game (35.2).

He played in his 50th career game as a Gopher on Monday against Nebraska. Carr, who played his freshman season at Pittsburgh, averages 17.1 points per game, 6.2 assists per game and 4.9 rebounds per game as a Gopher.

Those are historically good numbers.

At this point in his career, his 17.1 points per game would rank tenth in school history (minimum 40 games played) and would be the best career scoring average for a Gopher since Mychal Thompson averaged 20.8 points from 1975-78. His average of 6.2 assists per game would rank first in school history (minimum 40 games played) ahead of Ray Williams who averaged 5.7 from 1976-77.

Carr was named All-Big Ten Third Team last season after setting a school record with 207 assists in a season. He started every game and led the Big Ten in minutes played, while finishing second in the conference in assists and eighth in scoring.
