Seth Green is a receiver and wildcat quarterback on the University of Minnesota football team. Green is an Academic All-Big Ten performer and is a two-time recipient of the team's Tony Dungy Award, which is presented annually to a student who best exemplifies character and community service. He has played in 33 career games and has rushed 114 times for 388 yards and 15 touchdowns. He has caught six passes for 83 yards and has completed 6-of-7 passes for 57 yards and three touchdowns.
The Woodbury, Minn., native has already graduated with a degree in Business & Marketing Education and is working toward his Master's of Education in Human Resource Development.
To Green, Black History Month had been a time celebrate and recognize individuals in the Black community who achieved greatness in their life and field of expertise. This year, while still recognizing those who led the way, Black History Month has taken of a different and more personal meaning for Green.
"After the events of this summer, it seems more that Black history is now shifting in the lens looking at the good and the bad that has occurred to the Black community throughout American history and a lot of the struggles that we have had to overcome," said Green.
Green and his teammates were moved to action this past year and developed the H.E.R.E. (Helping End Racism through Education) program within the football team.
"It took a lot of collaboration from everybody and a lot of open conversations and dialogue to make sure everyone is on the same page and understands," said Green. "The goal of it was to include everyone and educate people on the differences and different struggles that different communities have been through."
In addition to the ongoing H.E.R.E. campaign, the football team wore Gold jerseys with END RACISM on the back against Purdue. This unifying plea for social and racial justice was broadcast to a national television audience and showed the solidarity of the program.
"It was an opportunity to stand for something bigger than us," said Green. "We knew that game was very important for what we were signifying and representing with our jerseys."
