Black History Month: Omar Douglas

Omar Douglas spent four years playing football and running track for the Golden Gophers from 1990 -1994. The New Orleans native and Isidore Newson High School graduate was the first football alumni to play in the NFL. This would not be the only first of his Hall of Fame Career. Omar became the University of Minnesota first Black Academic All American in 1994.
During his college football career at Minnesota and donning the No. 80, he finished his career with 130 receptions for 1,681 yards and 14 touchdowns, and setting school records for season and single game touchdown receptions. Douglas set a school and Big Ten record with five touchdown receptions against Purdue on Oct. 9, 1993. During his track & field career, he won the Big Ten indoor 55-meter championship in 1994 and was a two-time NCAA qualifier.
As an undrafted free agent signing with the Giants 1994, Douglas played for the Giants for four seasons and appeared in 18 games. Omar's son, Demetrius, played for the Gophers joining a very special group of legacy Gophers.
