Trio Earns WCHA Weekly Awards

Grace Zumwinkle, Crystalyn Hengler, and Abbey Murphy have earned WCHA Player of the Week awards after Minnesota's sweep at Bemidji State.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Grace Zumwinkle, Crystalyn Hengler, and Abbey Murphy have earned WCHA Player of the Week awards after Minnesota's sweep at Bemidji State last weekend. The Gophers wrapped up the regular season with 6-1 and 9-1 wins over the Beavers.

Zumwinkle has earned her second WCHA Forward of the Week award of the season and her ninth WCHA weekly honor of her career after leading the nation with eight points over the weekend, logging a WCHA-best four goals and four assists against the Beavers. Zumwinkle had back-to-back four-point games, scoring her third career hat trick with one assist in game one and scoring one goal with three assists in game two. The Excelsior, Minn., native led WCHA players with four goals, four assists, eight points, one game-winning goal, and one hat trick over the weekend; her nine shots on goal ranked second among WCHA players as well. Zumwinkle's eight-point series was a career-best while her four goals and four assists in the series each tied her career highs. Zumwinkle now owns sole possession of 10th in Minnesota history with 83 career goals as well. 

Hengler received her second WCHA Defense of the Week award of the season and her second WCHA weekly award of her career after tying for the WCHA lead among blue-liners with three points on the weekend. Hengler was the lone WCHA defense to score two goals over the weekend, and her +9 rating was the best in the nation. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native kick-started Minnesota's 15-goal series when she put the Gophers on the board just 2:01 into game one against Bemidji State. She went on to score her third power-play goal of the year in game two and added an assist. Hengler's three-point series matched her career best, and it marked her first career two-goal series. Defensively, Hengler and the Gophers held the Beavers to just one goal in each game.

Murphy picked up her second WCHA Rookie of the Week award after recording a career-high six-points series against Bemidji State. Her six points ranked second among all WCHA players on the weekend. Murphy scored three goals on just four shots on goal, leading the WCHA with .750 goals/shots on goal. Among WCHA rookies, the Evergreen Park, Ill., native led the way with six points, three goals, three assists, and a +6 rating for the weekend. Murphy posted back-to-back three points games with one goal and two assists in game one and two goals and one assist in game two.

The Golden Gopher women's hockey team is idle this week before the WCHA postseason begins next week.
