Thirteen Gophers are among the 2020-21 WCHA Scholar-Athlete award recipients.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Thirteen Golden Gopher women's hockey players are among the 85 student-athletes honored as 2020-21 WCHA Scholar-Athlete award recipients, the WCHA Women's League announced Thursday.

Emily Brown and Taylor Wente lead Minnesota as three-time WCHA Scholar-Athletes while Taylor Heise and Gracie Ostertag each earned their second award this season. Abigail Boreen, Olivia King, Olivia Knowles, Emily Oden, Makayla Pahl, Sydney Shearen, Catie Skaja, Madeline Wethington, and Grace Zumwinkle are also among the Gophers' award recipients.

"I want to congratulate our 2020-21 WCHA Scholar-Athletes on behalf of the Women's League of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association," WCHA Women's League Chairman Jason King said. "Once again, we have a group of outstanding student-athletes who have excelled on and off the ice. Our Scholar-Athlete honorees have shown exemplary effort and dedication as students and as competitors in what has been a very difficult year."

"The WCHA strives to be a leader academically and athletically," WCHA Women's League Commissioner Jennifer Flowers said. "To see so many of our young women succeeding in the classroom and on the ice during these unusual times is a credit to them and our member institutions."

The WCHA Scholar-Athlete Award was developed through member men's and women's institutional Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the WCHA membership for the 2005-06 season. To earn recognition as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete, league-member student-athletes must have completed at least one year of residency at their present institution prior to the current academic year and must also have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the previous two semesters or three quarters or may qualify if their overall GPA is at least 3.50 for all terms at his or her present institution.

Over the 16 years of the award, there have now been more than 1,200 men's and women's WCHA Scholar-Athlete honorees representing every WCHA member institution. Forty-one of this season's 85 women's recipients are repeat honorees, with 16 of those earning recognition for the third time.
