Black History Month: Eric Curry

2/3/2021 6:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball, M Club

Eric Curry is a redshirt senior forward on the Gopher men's basketball team. Named a team captain by his peers this year, Curry returned to the court after missing last year due to a knee injury. Hailing from Memphis, Tenn., Curry has played in over 65 career games for the Gophers and averages nearly 18 minutes a game even after multiple knee surgeries. Already obtaining a bachelor's degree in communications studies, he is currently working on a master's degree in youth development leadership.

To Curry, the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis only resurfaced the importance of showcasing Black History month. What individuals went through in the past is just as relevant now. When asking Curry about the impact George Floyd's death had on the team, they gathered together and spoke as a group.

"The other players and coaches, they all just listened to us," Curry said. "I feel like that was the most important part, they were listening to understand. They weren't listening to respond, and that was the big thing about it. They wanted to learn more because obviously they don't know what we actually go through or see it, but they just want to know, understand, help us out and try to be better people."

This year, the Gophers wear a warmup shirt with one simple word shown on the front: Unity. Curry said they, as a group, wanted to do something after what happened in Minneapolis earlier this year. That one word simplifies it best: no matter your background, they are in this together as equals.

"We have different races on our team, and we wanted to let everyone in the world know that we're all together," Curry said. "Even though we probably look different and come in different shapes and sizes, we're all one."
