Samedy, Shaffmaster Receive B1G Laurels

Stephanie Samedy (Clermont, Fla.) and Melani Shaffmaster (New Castle, Ind.) received Big Ten weekly honors, announced today by the league office. Samedy was named the Player of the Week, while Shaffmaster was named Setter of the Week. It is Samedy's first honor this year and second for Shaffmaster, the first coming as Freshman of the Week.
Samedy, a senior opposite hitter, amassed 48 kills last weekend and averaged 4.80 kills per set in a pair of five-set wins over No. 13 Purdue. She also had 112 attempts and hit .313 on the weekend. Along with her offensive production, she had 36 digs and seven blocks. On Friday, Samedy had 28 kills and 26 digs to become the first Golden Gopher in over a decade to put up those numbers. The last time that happened dates back to Katherine Harms against Washington on Dec. 3, 2011. Samedy followed with another 20-kill performance, including five in six attempts in the deciding fifth set to hit .833. Samedy also added 10 digs for her second-straight double double. In six matches this season, Samedy has 91 kills this season, averages 4.14 per set and averages 2.86 digs per set.
Shaffmaster, a freshman setter, averaged 11.30 assists per set and had 113 assists against No. 13 Purdue. She posted a match-best 60 assists Friday and also had 12 digs for the double double. Shaffmaster also added three kills, an ace and a solo block. On Saturday, she followed with another match-best assists (53), added another double double with 15 digs, and had three blocks and three kills. The Gophers hit .650 in Saturday's fifth and final set and had 14 kills as Shaffmaster assisted on 12 of them. On the season, Shaffmaster averages 9.64 assists per set and has 212 assists on the season. She has also added 58 digs, nine blocks and six aces.
The Golden Gophers return to Maturi Pavilion this upcoming weekend when they host Penn State, Saturday and Sunday. Both matches are on Big Ten Network. Saturday's match is at 7 p.m., while Sunday's contest is a 6:30 p.m. start. Both matches are also available on KFAN +.
