Black History Month: Gadiva Hubbard
2/8/2021 7:34:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Gadiva Hubbard is a redshirt senior guard on the Minnesota women's basketball team. She's been a fixture in the Golden Gopher lineup since her freshman season and now ranks fourth in program history in 3-pointers attempted, seventh in 3-pointers made and 18th in points scored. After missing the 2018-19 season due to injury, she came back a year ago to earn All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors and was chosen as an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Hubbard used to view Black History Month as just that: a history lesson. But she views February differently now. "After everything that happened in the summer, I think it's more than just learning about the history of black people," she explained. "It's appreciating black people and learning about the things that we're still going through. We learned this summer that things happening then are still happening now. I think it's important to still educate ourselves about everything and keep going from there."
Hubbard and her teammates have worn 'Black Lives Matter' shirts during warmups before every game this year. She thinks the message can reach people in different ways. "For the people who do know what's going on, we want people to know we are following what's happening and we are supporting the black people that have fallen because of all the incidents," she said. "But for the people that don't know, we want them to ask the question 'what does 'BLM' stand for?' and then learn things about it."
