Gophers Fall to Nebraska in Big Ten Tournament

MINNEAPOLIS -- Missing its top three scorers due to injury, ninth-seeded Minnesota (8-13) fell to No. 8 Nebraska (12-11) Wednesday in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament, 72-61, in Indianapolis.
Sophomores Jasmine Powell, Sara Scalia and Kadi Sissoko all missed the contest as the Golden Gophers lost to the Huskers for the first time in three meetings this year.
Four players reached double figures for Minnesota with senior Gadiva Hubbard and freshman Katie Borowicz leading the way with 12 points and four assists each. Borowicz, who was making her first career start, added a career-high three steals and three rebounds while playing a personal best 36:47.
Sophomore Klarke Sconiers chipped in with 11 points, a career-high tying three assists and two blocks off the bench, while senior Laura Bagwell Katalinich was a rebound short of her first double-double of the season with 10 points and a season-high nine rebounds.
A tight first quarter featured two ties and five lead changes. Junior Kayla Mershon, who spent her first two seasons at Nebraska, had three points and four rebounds in the opening frame helped keep the Gophers in the game. The game was tied at 11-11, but Nebraska broke away with an 18-3 run over an eight-minute stretch that carried midway into the second quarter.
The Huskers outscored Minnesota 22-10 overall in the frame to lead 38-21 at halftime. Nebraska carried a lead of 15 more points for most of the third quarter, but the Gophers started to get closer in the final minutes of the stanza and got within 12 with less than a minute to play. Outscoring Nebraska 14-12 in the quarter, Minnesota trailed 50-35 entering the fourth.
Nebraska was able to push its lead back up to 20 points in the fourth, including at 61-41 with 6:29 remaining. But Minnesota kept fighting, using a 6-0 run behind baskets from Sconiers, Mershon and Bagwell Katalinich to inch closer. The Huskers' were able to keep the Gophers at bay, but a 3-pointer from Borowicz did cut the lead to 10 with 26 seconds to play.
For the second straight quarter, Minnesota outscored Nebraska, this time 26-22.
Nebraska was led by Sam Haiby's 19 points and team-high eight rebounds, while Kate Cain had 16 and Isabelle Bourne finished with 14 points.
