As the University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team approaches senior night and the last home meet of the regular season, each senior took time to reflect on a lifetime of gymnastics and put a lifetime's worth of memories into a few paragraphs. Take a trip through Lexi Montgomery's personal story with the sport she has dedicated so much of her life to.
Dear Gymnastics,Â
This has been the ride of a lifetime. This sport has been my everything for the past 20 years and I am sad to say it is all coming to an end in April. I do not know who I'd be without this sport because it has taught me so many life lessons. Six days a week I would eat, sleep, breath gymnastics and I would not change it for the world. Though this sport is amazing, I endured a lot of hard times along the way. My JO career was hard for me yet I never gave up. I am forever grateful for my club coaches Marnie Futch and Gina Quinlan who guided me and encouraged me to persevere through thick and thin. Without them I would not be where I am today, enjoying the sport I love while pursuing a college education. I am so grateful for my sister who was my role model for many years and then my biggest fan. Thank you to my parents who have been my rock since day one, always by my side encouraging and supporting me for the entire roller coaster ride! Gymnastics has taught me so much, from being disciplined with my time management to always persevering through the hard times. I am forever grateful for this sport and all it put me through. I am sad that this chapter of my life is coming to a close but excited for what my future holds.Â
Thank you gymnastics,
Lexi Montgomery
GopherSports: How would you describe your Gopher Women's gymnastics experience?Â
Lexi Montgomery: Grateful and eye opening. My time here at the U was one to remember from career highs to embracing the journey. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity given to me.Â
GS: What has been your favorite memory from your time on the team?
LM: One of my favorite memories on this team would have to be competing on beam at Big Tens my Freshman year and getting a 9.8. I remember that moment like it was yesterday.Â
GS: What are you going to miss the most?Â
LM: I am going to miss the snow and of course the family atmosphere this team has. Also, giving everyone hugs. I love my teammates so much.Â
