Tee Time with Grace Kellar

Grace Kellar is off to a great start to the 2021 season, competing at all three events so far. Her most recent success came at the Briar's Creek Invitational where she shot a one-under par third round. Catch up with one of the seniors for the Maroon and Gold in this Tee Time feature.

How has it felt to be back on campus with your teammates?
It's been good but at the same time it's been strange! Being a senior, I'm so used to the fall season getting off to a quick start and spending all day on the golf course with my teammates. It is nice to be back though and to at least have some normalcy.

What are you most looking forward to this season?
I'm looking forward to spending one last semester with the best teammates. It's a special group of girls and each one of them brings something so important to the team. I've learned a lot from all of them.

Now entering your senior season, what is something you want to improve on from last year?
I would say my putting, for sure. If you'd look at my putting stats from my last tournament, you would probably laugh. I have a different mentality going into this season though, which hopefully translates to a more relaxed play.

How are the underclassmen contributing to the team?
The underclassmen are contributing in amazing ways. I'm not sure I've ever seen a group of underclassmen more dedicated to the game and to getting better. It's really inspiring, actually. They're killing it.

What are you most proud of from your career so far?
I'm most proud of how much I've learned from competing on a college golf team. There are so many highs that stay with you forever but there are also lows. I've learned a lot about myself through these lows and how important it is to have a team to push you to be your best, which is what I've had at Minnesota.

What was your favorite class from the fall semester?
My favorite class would be my digital marketing class. I want to get into advertising, so this class has been really interesting to me so far. It's also awesome because the final project allows us to work with a real-world business in developing a strong digital marketing strategy for them.

What did you do over the summer to practice and improve your skills?
Over the summer, I really focused on my fitness and developed a different mindset towards the game. This is my last year of competitive golf and I want to enjoy it as much as I can. Having a clear mindset on the golf course and just appreciating the game for what it is has made it so much more enjoyable. I've also really loved focusing on my fitness and learning more about nutrition to get my body in the best shape possible.

What was it like to compete in events this summer, such as the Eagle Eye GCAA Amateur?
Competing in the GCAA tournament was a lot of fun. I went into it just wanting to compete again, see where my game was at and compete with minimal expectations. I also got to go with my mom and sister so it was a nice little girls trip too. It had been a few months since my last tournament, so it reminded me how much I love to compete.

Did you pick up any fun hobbies during the summer quarantine period?
I've gotten really into baking and running. I never used to run more than a mile but I found it to be a relaxing, socially-distanced activity that got me out of the house. I also started baking and cooking a lot. I love food so learning new recipes was awesome.
