Shea Rubright has been with the Gopher Volleyball program since January 2019 when she was an early enrollee. As a freshman in 2019, Rubright played in 27 sets as a freshman and contributed three kills and 11 blocks. A political science major, Rubright looks to attend law school post graduation. Get to know the Yakima, Wash., native in this Gophers spotlight.
You've been with the program since January of 2019. Since being here, what have you learned and how have you been able to improve throughout that time?
Throughout my time here I have learned so much about volleyball and myself. Skill wise, the coaches have completely transformed me as a player and have given me the tools to one day become the best I can be. Besides skills, they have also made me a better person and I have learned how to be more confident in myself and my abilities.
Your dad played basketball, your mom played volleyball, how did you end up landing on the sport of volleyball instead of basketball?
I played basketball for 12 years before I decided to quit, so it was a really hard decision. Eventually though, around my freshman year of highschool I decided to quit basketball and focus solely on volleyball. I had only played volleyball for about 2 years at that point, but I knew that I was in love with it and that was what I wanted to do. Both of my parents were super supportive throughout the entire process and helped me figure out that volleyball was perfect for me.
Do you have a major and if so, what would you like to do with it once done with college?
Currently I am majoring in political science and have aspirations to go to law school post graduation. I am not sure what I want to do with my potential law degree yet, but I think I have figured out that I would like to stay in the sports industry. My dream job would be an agent for NBA players and other professional sports.
We're playing in an unprecedented time. What are you most thankful for during this time?
I am most thankful for being able to play this season. It is over a year since we were shut down, so it is amazing to finally be back on the court. I know how hard everyone behind the scenes is working to put us out there, so I am really thankful for all of them as well.
