Matt Bingle, Bethany Hasz, and Sarah Hopkins are among the USTFCCCA Midwest Region award recipients.
MINNEAPOLIS -- A trio of Golden Gopher track & field representatives are among the 2021 USTFCCCA Midwest Region award recipients, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Thursday. Senior distance runner Bethany Hasz has been named the Midwest Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year, director of track & field/cross country Matt Bingle has been named the Midwest Region Women's Coach of the Year, and assistant coach Sarah Hopkins has been named the Midwest Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.
Hasz is undefeated during the 2021 season, winning all four of her races with three appearances in the 3,000 meters and one appearance in the 5,000 meters. She won the Big Ten title in the 3,000 meters after improving on her own Minnesota program record in the event with a 12-second PR earlier in the season at the Hawkeye B1G Invitational with a career-best time of 8:59.37. In the 5,000-meters, Hasz clocked a time of 15:50.74 in her lone appearance of the season back in January at the Husker Triangular. Hasz qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in both events but scratched from the 3,000 meters to focus on the 5,000 meters.
A day after being named the 2021 Big Ten Conference Women's Coach of the Year, Bingle has earned his fifth USTFCCCA Midwest Region Women's Coach of the Year nod, having won the award during the 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2018 indoor seasons as well. Under Bingle's direction, the Gopher women won the program's fifth indoor and eighth overall Big Ten Conference title this season. The team scored 138 points to win the B1G title by 58 points behind eight conference titles and 14 top-three finishes. The Minnesota women lead the Midwest Regional rankings in six events and rank first in the Midwest Region overall. This season, the team has recorded program all-time top-10 marks in 14 different events. Five individuals and one relay team will represent the Minnesota women at the NCAA Indoor Championships as well.
Hopkins' distance corps scored 33 points in four different events at the Big Ten Indoor Championships to help Minnesota to the team crown, including winning the 3,000 meters and the distance medley relay -- marking the program's first Big Ten champion in both events. Hopkins coached her athletes to four Minnesota all-time top-10 marks, including the 3,000-meter program record performance by Hasz. Her squad ranks fifth in the 5,000 meters, eighth in 3,000 meters, and 10th in 800 meters in the USTFCCCA Event Squad rankings for the nation's top foursome per event.
