Duong, Kuehn Named All-Big Ten; Four Gophers Garner All-Conference Honors

MINNEAPOLIS – Four Gophers have garnered 2020-21 Big Ten women's soccer individual awards for their performances this past season, as announced by the conference on Wednesday afternoon: midfielder Katie Duong (All-Big Ten Second Team), defender Athena Kuehn (All-Big Ten Third Team), midfielder Sophia Boman (Big Ten All-Freshman Team) and defender Delaney Stekr (Sportsmanship Award).
For Duong, the All-Big Ten Second Team accolade comes on the heels of a 2019 rookie campaign in which the Gopher midfielder collected Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors. As a sophomore in 2020-21, Duong started all 12 games for Minnesota and played all 1,147 minutes for the squad. Duong paced the Gophers with three assists on the season, one of which powered the game-winning, golden goal scored by Sadie Harper against Northwestern in the 96th minute of play on March 4.
Earning her first career end-of-season All-Big Ten honor, Kuehn also started all 12 games for the Gophers this past season while playing all 1,147 minutes on the back-line. Kuehn played a vital role in developing Minnesota into one of the premier defenses in the Big Ten in 2020-21. The Maroon & Gold allowed just 10 total goals all season, which was tied for the third fewest in the conference. Minnesota also tied for second in shutouts (six), while surrendering just 70 shots (5.8 per game) all year long. Throughout the past four seasons, Kuehn appeared in all 73 games for Minnesota, finishing her Gopher career with 53 starts, three goals, three assists and nine points.
As it relates to Boman, All-Big Ten recognition has become something of a norm in the midfielder's young collegiate career. Prior to Wednesday's All-Big Ten Freshman Team honor, Boman was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on two separate occasions (March 16, March 30) en route to finishing her rookie campaign with the team lead in points. The Edina, Minn. native hauled in the first such award after scoring her first career goal in the form of a game-winner to lift Minnesota to a 1-0 win over Iowa on March 14. The second such accolade followed her second career goal, which also marked a game-winner against Purdue on March 25. Overall, Boman finished the season with two goals while leading the team in both points (five) and shots (33). Like Duong and Kuehn, Boman started every game and played all 1,147 minutes for the Gophers this past year.
In representing Minnesota as their Sportsmanship Award recipient, Stekr adds yet another feather to her cap in what was a breakout spring 2021 season. Stekr started all 12 games and played all but seven minutes for the Gophers for a grand total of 1,140 minutes played. Like Kuehn, Stekr was a major part of a lockdown Minnesota back-line, even earning her first career point by assisting Boman's game-winning goal against Purdue on March 25.
With the 2020-21 season now in the books, the Gophers will next compete this upcoming fall as part of the regularly scheduled fall 2021 slate.
