Colorado Springs, Colorado (May 26, 2021) – Six-foot-nine Joey King (Minnesota/Eagan, Minn.), who most recently played with the USA 3x3 Men's National Team at the Big Twelve Invitational Tournament this past weekend, has been added to the USA roster for the FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament for May 26-30 in Graz, Austria. The top three finishing men's and top three women's teams will earn a berth in to the inaugural Olympic 3x3 competition.
King joins Robbie Hummel (Purdue/Valparaiso, Ind.), Dominique Jones (Fort Hays State/Harlem, N.Y.) and Kareem Maddox (Princeton/Los Angeles, Calif.). The event will be streamed live at FIBA's 3x3 You Tube Channel.
Canyon Barry (Iowa Wolves/Florida/Colorado Springs, Colo.), who had participated in USA training camps in 2021 and was named to the USA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Team in February 2020, is not able to participate due to a back injury.
"I'm humbled for the opportunity to play and compete with a USA jersey on my chest," King said. "I've been playing 3x3 basketball for a few years now. And this is the opportunity of a lifetime to go and compete for a chance to qualify for the Olympics. I'm just extremely excited to be headed into Graz, and I'm looking forward to the opportunity."
At the FIBA 3x3 OQT, the USA men will play in Group B and will open on May 27 against Lithuania at 7:55 a.m. (all times listed are EDT), followed by South Korea at 9:35 a.m. On May 29, the USA will meet Kazakhstan at 7:55 a.m. and Belgium at 9:35 a.m. in its last two preliminary games.
Hummel, Jones, King and Maddox recently played at the Big Twelve 3x3 International Tournament in Voiron, France, for a chance to get some warm-up games in ahead of the FIBA 3x3 OQT. The team finished runner-up, losing to Serbia in the final.
The USA women, who won the Big Twelve title, will play at the OQT in Group A. WNBA players Stefanie Dolson (Chicago Sky/Connecticut/Port Jervis, N.Y.), Allisha Gray (Dallas Wings/South Carolina/Sandersville, Ga.), Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces/Washington/Poway, Calif.) and Katie Lou Samuelson (Seattle Storm/Connecticut/Huntington Beach, Calif.) will take on Indonesia at 5 a.m. and France at 7:05 a.m. on May 27. On May 29, they will complete preliminary games against Germany at 7:05 a.m. and Uruguay at 9:10 a.m.
For both tournaments, after the preliminary round, the top two finishing teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals on May 30, and the quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinals.
The two winning semifinal teams from the men's and women's games will represent four of the six Olympic berths at the event, and those four teams will not play a championship game. Instead, the two losing semifinal teams will play for the men's and women's third place titles, and the last Olympic spots.
3x3 basketball is played with a 12-second shot clock on a half court. Baskets inside the arc and free throws are worth one point, and baskets made from outside the arc are worth two points. The winner is the first team to score 21 points, or the leading team at the end of the 10-minute game clock.
