Abby Kohut-Jackson and Madeline Strandemo ran in the 3,000m steeplechase first round heats Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Minnesota redshirt senior Abby Kohut-Jackson and Gophers alumna Madeline Strandemo raced in the first round of the women's 3,000m steeplechase Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Kohut-Jackson recorded a time of 9:52.84 to place 10th in her heat and 19th overall while Strandemo came in 15th in her heat and 27th overall in 10:01.85. The top five in each of two first-round heats and the next four fastest athletes advanced to the final.
For Kohut-Jackson, her Olympic Trials berth put an exclamation point on a stellar track & field season. She was named a Second Team All-American after finishing 11th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at this year's NCAA Championships, received USTFCCCA Midwest Region Outdoor Women's Track Athlete of the Year honors, won the Big Ten 3,000-meter steeplechase title, and improved upon Minnesota's 3,000-meter steeplechase record in three consecutive races, ending with a career-best time of 9:41.20 set during the NCAA semifinal heats. Meanwhile, Strandemo previously held the Gophers' program record with her collegiate-best time from 2018 at 9:51.49, which now ranks second in program history. Strandemo, who now runs for Oiselle/Littlewing Athletics, recorded a career-best time of 9:49.71 earlier this season.
Action continues for the Gopher representatives at the U.S. Olympic Trials with redshirt senior Alec Basten and alum Obsa Ali racing in the first round of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase on Monday evening.
