Minnesota now has six Academic All-America team members in the last three years
University of Minnesota offensive lineman Blaise Andries was named to the 2020 Academic All-America Division I Football Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today. Andries was named to the First Team. This honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Andries, who is majoring in Mathematics and is an aspiring actuary, is a repeat honoree after being named Second Team last season. He is Minnesota's first repeat selection since Sam Renner, who was named Second Team in both 2018 and 2019.
Minnesota now has six Academic All-America team members in the last three years, as Payton Jordahl and Gary Moore were also recognized in 2018. Prior to this, Minnesota last had six players recognized from 2003-15.
The six players recognized are also the most in Minnesota program history in a three-year span, besting the previous mark of five players (Justin Conzemius 1993, 1994 and 1995, Omar Douglas 1993 and Jeff Rosga 1993) from 1993-1995.
This is also the third time ever that Minnesota has gone three straight years with an Academic All-America honoree. The previous years were 1993-95 (mentioned above) and 2003-2005 (Justin Isom, 2003, Greg Eslinger 2004 and 2005 and Mark Losli 2005).
The Marshall, Minn., native has started all 33 games he has played in and is a versatile player for the Gophers. He has started at four different positions on the offensive line for the Gophers, including 12 starts at right guard, 11 at left guard, eight at right tackle and two at left tackle.
Andries was named Academic All-Big Ten in 2020, 2019 and 2018 and was selected All-Big Ten Third Team in 2020 and 2019.
