Minnesota earns the Team AVCA Academic Award for second year in a row
The University of Minnesota garnered its second consecutive American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, the AVCA announced on Monday morning. The United State Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced today that 1,275 collegiate and high school teams have earned the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2020-2021 season.
Minnesota had eight individuals this past season receive Academic All-Big Ten honors, while Ellie Husemann, CC McGraw, Bayley McMenimen and Shea Rubright were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. Minnesota, who finished the 2020-21 season with a 16-3 (15-2 B1G) record, made it to the NCAA Regional Semifinals and ranked ninth in the AVCA Final Poll.
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or 4.10 on a 5.0 scale.
Women's collegiate teams were well represented; over 50% of the membership in all three NCAA divisions won the award, including a new record of 243 DI programs.
