AHCA Honors Program-Record Twelve Gophers as All-American Scholars

Maggie Nicholson, Audrey Wethington, Madeline Wethington, Taylor Wente, Gracie Ostertag, Olivia King, Emily Brown, Emily Oden, Catie Skaja, Anne Cherkowski, Tella Jungels and Josey Dunne have been named All-American Scholars for 2020-21.
MINNEAPOLIS — Twelve members of the Golden Gopher women's hockey team are among the individuals honored by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) as All-American Scholars, the organization announced on Monday. Maggie Nicholson, Audrey Wethington, Madeline Wethington, Taylor Wente, Gracie Ostertag, Olivia King, Emily Brown, Emily Oden, Catie Skaja, Anne Cherkowski, Tella Jungels, and Josey Dunne have been recognized for their outstanding work in the classroom during an exceptionally unique 2020-21 season. The Gophers bested their previous program record of seven, set in the 2016-2017 season.
Due to the effects of Covid-19 on actual grades, the AHCA adopted revised criteria for this year's honorees. To qualify, a student-athlete must have attained a 3.6 GPA for each semester regardless of whether the school's hockey team was able to play this season or not. Normally, a student-athlete is required to participate in a minimum of 40% of a team's games.
"We made a decision to include all hockey players who met the academic standard, whether their team was allowed to play or not," said AHCA executive director Joe Bertagna. "Those who were denied a chance to compete have already been disadvantaged and we did not want to add to their situation."
The AHCA has honored 917 NCAA Division I men's and women's hockey student-athletes with the announcement of the fifth annual AHCA "All-American Scholars". The Western Collegiate Hockey Association Women's League landed 81 student-athletes on the list while 385 Division I women's hockey players were honored nationally.
