Gopher center regarded as one of the top in the country by Pro Football Focus

Minnesota center John Michael Schmitz was named to the Rimington Trophy Watch list today. The award is presented annually to the top center in the nation. This year, the Trophy committee worked with Pro Football Focus (PFF) to narrow down its list to the top 40 centers.

Schmitz, who is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, was named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention last season. He routinely received high grades from PFF and started six games at center last season as Minnesota averaged 27.3 points per game.

In 2019, he played in 13 games and started four at center. Minnesota was 3-1 with him starting at center as he got the nod against Nebraska (team rushed for 322 yards and four touchdowns), Penn State (team completed 18-of-20 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns), Iowa (team threw for 368 yards) and Auburn (team gained 494 yards and did not allow a sack).
