MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota soccer team had three individuals named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List, announced by the conference office Monday. Delaney Stekr, Megan Gray and Sophia Boman were named, all firsts for the trio of Gophers.
Stekr, who was a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree last season, has appeared in 27 matches for the Gophers in her career and has started in 21 of those matches as a defender. As a center back Stekr has one assist in her career.
A mainstay in the Gophers lineup during her career, Gray enters the 2021 season with 54 matches played with the Maroon and Gold. Gray has played in every match the Gophers have played since she joined the program in 2018 and has started in 24 of those. She's scored three goals in her career including one in Gophers last NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018.
Boman is the youngest of the three Gophers on this year's Big Ten Preseason Honors List. After a stellar freshman campaign where she was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team, Boman will look to improve on her shortened first season. Last year Boman scored two goals and had one assist while starting all 12 matches. Boman also had a team-high 33 shots and both of her goals were gamewinners.
In addition, the conference released the 2021 Big Ten Coaches' Poll where Minnesota found itself sitting 10th among the conference's 14 teams.
Minnesota's 2021 regular season begins on Aug. 19, when the Maroon and Gold host Baylor at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The match will kick off at 6 p.m. on BTN+. Season tickets, along with single match tickets, are available online, visit the Gophers' ticketing page for more information on how to purchase.
