Minnesota Draws North Carolina for B1G/ACC Challenge

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota women's basketball team will host North Carolina on Wednesday, Dec. 1, as part of the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge, it was announced Tuesday. Game time and television coverage will be announced at a later date.

The Golden Gophers are 6-7 all-time in the event, which is now in its 14th year, including a 4-2 mark at home. Minnesota has won two straight in the Challenge, beating then-No. 12 Syracuse at Williams Arena in 2018, 72-68, then going on the road in 2019 to grab a 75-67 victory over Notre Dame.

Minnesota and North Carolina have met five times previously. The Gophers won the first all-time matchup in 1980 but UNC has rattled off four straight wins since, including victories in the second round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament and in the 2017 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. This year's meeting will be the first between the schools to take place in Minneapolis.

Minnesota is coming off an 8-13 season (7-11 in Big Ten play). The team is set to return 12 of 13 members from last season's squad, including its top 11 scorers. In addition, the Gophers welcome in four newcomers with graduate transfers Deja Winters and Bailey Helgren, as well as freshmen Maggie Czinano and Alanna Micheaux.

Rising juniors Jasmine Powell and Sara Scalia each earned All-Big Ten honors this past season. Powell was named Second Team All-Big Ten by the league's coaches and Honorable Mention All-Big Ten by the media covering the conference. Meanwhile, Scalia was chosen Honorable Mention All-Big Ten by the coaches and media.

North Carolina was 13-11 overall last year with an 8-9 mark in the ACC. The Tar Heels reached the NCAA Tournament, losing to Alabama in a first-round contest. Sophomore guard Deja Kelly, who was fourth on the squad with 11.0 points per game, is the team's top returning scorer. She was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team and was a two-time ACC Freshman of the Week.
