Meet the Freshmen: Haley Tyson

MINNEAPOLIS- The Gophers women's gymnastics team welcomes five incoming freshmen to the team for the 2021-22 season and it is time to get to know our newcomers!
Haley Tyson is a native of Aurora, Ill. She competes for Phenom Gymnastics and attends Waubonsie Valley High School. In 2018, Tyson was first in the all-around in her home state of Illinois and a 2018 JO National Floor Champion. She won the 2019 State Championship titles on vault, bars and floor. Also in 2019, Tyson was the regional vault and all-around champion.
GopherSports: How old were you when you started gymnastics?
Haley Tyson: I was five years old when I first started gymnastics. I fell in love with the sport on day one because I saw the older girls doing big skills and wanted to become just like them.
GS: What is your favorite event and why?
HT: My favorite event is bars because I love flipping and swinging through the air. Bars used to be my least favorite event but over the years it has grown on me to become my favorite!
GS: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
HT: I chose the University of Minnesota because they have many great academic opportunities and because of the gymnastics team. The coaching staff and team were very inviting and made me feel welcome.
GS: What is your favorite memory from competing at JO Nationals?
HT: My favorite memory from JO Nationals was being the floor national champion in 2018 and making the JO National team two times.
GS: What do you plan on majoring in?
HT: As of right now I am still undecided but interested in radiology.
GS: What are your hobbies outside of gymnastics?
HT: Some hobbies outside of gymnastics that I like to do are hanging out with my friends and family, cooking, baking and training my dog on new tricks.
