Samedy tallied her 45th career double double for Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 10 University of Minnesota volleyball team fell in four sets to the No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns, 24-26, 21-25, 25-21, 22-25 on Wednesday night at Maturi Pavilion.

The Golden Gophers (1-2, 0-0 Big Ten) were led by redshirt senior opposite Stephanie Samedy, who finished with 21 kills and 19 digs to earn her 45th career double double. Taylor Landfair and Jenna Wenaas both notched 11 kills apiece. CC McGraw tallied a season-high 24 digs and posted a .960 reception percentage in 25 chances.

"We can take some positives away from this loss, and one of those was that the team showed some competitive resilience," Coach McCutcheon said. "That's something we're going to need if we're going to be the team we want to be in December."

Minnesota came out of the gates strong, outplaying the Longhorns and taking a 23-18 lead late in the first set. UT went on to take eight of the next nine points and sneak out a 26-24 victory to go up 1-0. The second set was highly competitive once again as the teams had nearly 10 ties and three lead changes. UT ended up prevailing in the end, 25-21, scoring the final four points of the set. The Gophers would go on to take set three after hitting a scoring .394 to take it home, 25-21. The Longhorns were able to finish out the match with a strong fourth set, outscoring the Gophers 7-2 after trailing 20-18 to finish the match.

As a team, Minnesota hit .168 with 49 kills, five aces, 79 digs and 16 blocks. Texas hit .216 with 58 kills, 73 digs, seven aces and 20 blocks. Logan Eggleston led the Longhorns with 17 kills and 12 digs.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: After dropping the first two points, the Gophers responded affirmatively, scoring six straight points. Taylor Landfair paced the offensive attack, tallying three kills in the first six points and six overall for the set. Minnesota kept a steady lead for most of the set and led by as many as seven at 14-7. The Longhorns cut the deficit to just two at 15-13 before a 6-1 Minnesota run spurned the tide. Husemann, Samedy, Shaffmaster and Wenaas all had one kill each. Seven UT attacking errors and three blocks from the Gophers led a strong defensive set as the 'U' held the Longhorns to a .105 hitting percentage. Minnesota led 21-13, but UT finished the set on a 13-4 run to go up 1-0. Minnesota hit just .047 with nine attacking errors.

Set 2: The Longhorns started set two hot, scoring the first four points and getting three kills from Brionne Butler. Minnesota would fight back, scoring four of the next five to get back within one. After registering just two kills in the first set, Samedy turned her game up a notch, tallying seven kills to get her team back in it. The two teams went back-and-forth throughout the middle of the set, with neither leading by more than three points. UT led most of the way before the 'U' took its first lead, going up 18-17 on a kill from Samedy. UT would respond, however, getting two kills from Skylar Fields and a service ace from Melanie Parra to go up 21-19 and cause a timeout from coach McCutcheon. A Longhorns attacking error and an ace from Katie Myers allowed the Gophers to tie it up at 21, but UT would score four straight points to close out the set, 25-21. Texas hit .333 in the second set while Minnesota hit .135.

Set 3: Minnesota quickly took a 7-2 lead in the third set, getting three kills from Wenaas, a pair from Samedy and one from Myers. The Longhorns answered with a 7-3 run to cut the Gophers lead to 10-9. The 'U' bounced back with an 8-2 run of their own, led by three kills from Samedy and a trio of errors from the Longhorns. Trailing 20-15, UT once again made a late set charge, scoring six of the next eight points to cut Minnesota's lead to just two at 22-20. A kill from Landfair from the block helped the 'U' turn the momentum back in their favor as the Gophers took three of the final four points to win, 25-21. The Gophers hit a spectacular .394 in set three with 15 kills on 33 swings.

Set 4: Like the rest of the match, the fourth set was extremely tightly contested. UT went up 2-0 early, but Minnesota continued to battle throughout. Wenaas continued to shine in the late stages of the match, registering four kills and a block. The set had 13 ties and three lead changes. Landfair and Samedy had three kills each for the 'U,' who hit .146 on the set. Minnesota took its largest lead of the set at 20-18 after a block combo from Shea Rubright and Samedy, but UT took the next five points to go up 23-20. A kill from Samedy and a block from Rubright cut the lead to one at 23-22, but the Longhorns scored the next two points to take the match, 3-1.
