Airi Miyabe and Jenna Wenaas both set career-highs in kills
EUGENE, Oregon -- The No. 13 University of Minnesota volleyball team took down the No. 14 Stanford Cardinal on Friday evening in Eugene, Ore., 25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 25-17.
The Golden Gophers (2-3, 0-0 Big Ten) were led by Stephanie Samedy, who tallied a match-high 20 kills with 14 digs and three blocks. Jenna Wenaas (17 kills) and Airi Miyabe (14) both tallied career-highs to help pace a Minnesota offensive attack that hit an outstanding .329 for the evening. CC McGraw had a match-high 19 digs while Katie Myers had seven blocks from the middle blocker position.
"I thought our consistency over the four games was pretty good overall," said head coach Hugh McCutcheon. "We got in a little bit of trouble there in the second set, but we were able to work through that. I think that's a really important thing to understand - is that there is always going to be ebb and flow but we can get back to the plan and play some really good Gopher volleyball. I'm really proud of the team. It was a great win and I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
Minnesota took the first set, 25-22, getting key contributions from the whole lineup. Jenna Wenaas (six kills) and Samedy (three) paced the offensive attack. Stanford came back to win set two, 25-19, finishing on a 10-4 run to even up the match. The Gophers came back to win set three wire-to-wire, 25-16. Samedy landed on seven of her eight swings in the set to lead a scorching offensive set (.484) for her team. Wenaas continued her career night in set four, notching seven kills to help close out the match for the Gophers.
As a team, Minnesota hit .329 with 63 kills, four aces, 59 digs and 14 blocks. Stanford hit .199 with 48 kills, 51 digs, five aces and nine blocks. Caitie Baird led the Cardinal with 17 kills.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The two teams exchanged the first 14 points of the match and were tied at seven. Samedy tallied two kills and a solo block to get the Gophers started. The 'U' would go on a 7-3 run through the next 14, getting a kill and a couple block assists each from Jenna Wenaas and Katie Myers. After a Stanford timeout and two quick points to cut Minnesota's lead to 14-12, Airi Miyabe led a 5-0 Gophers run, tallying two kills and a block assist to give her team a 19-12 advantage. The 'U' went up 20-13 on the fourth kill of the set from Wenaas, but the Cardinal answered with a 5-0 run, leading to a timeout from coach McCutcheon. Wenaas struck twice more, leading a 3-1 run and putting Minnesota up 23-19 for her fifth and six kills of the set. The Cardinal wouldn't go away, registering three straight to cut the Gopher lead to one at 23-22, but a service and an attacking error for the Cardinal allowed the Gophers to take set one, 25-22. Minnesota hit .182 for the set and held Stanford to just .122.
Set 2: Stanford and Minnesota once again exchanged the first 14 points of the set. Katie Myers had a kill and an ace while Samedy tallied two kills to get the Gophers going. After the 'U' scored two straight to tie the set at seven, Stanford went on a 5-1 run to go up 12-8 and force coach McCutcheon to take his first timeout of the set. The Cardinal would go up 14-9 before a 6-1 run from the Gophers tied it back up at 15. A kill from Samedy, an ace from McGraw and a trio of Cardinal errors allowed the 'U' to go on the run. Stanford spurned the run, however, with a kill and three straight aces from Caitie Baird to take a 20-15 lead. Two quick Gopher points were thwarted by a 4-0 Cardinal run.
Set 3: Minnesota led wire-to-wire in set three, getting an efficient and timely effort from Samedy, who tallied seven kills on eight swings (.875). Airi Miyabe also had four kills on eight swings while Wenaas and Husemann had two kills each to aid a scorching .484 hitting set for the Gophers. A strong defensive effort saw eight blocks from Minnesota, including three from Husemann and two each from Samedy and Shaffmaster. Stanford hit just .161 for the set and had six attacking errors compared to just one for the Gophers.
Set 4: The fourth and final set was mostly all Minnesota once again. The Gophers trailed just once in the whole set at 3-2 before going on an 11-6 run to take a 14-9 lead. Stanford cut the lead to two at 16-14, but would get no closer. Miyabe and Wenaas tallied two kills each to put the 'U' up 20-15 before back-to-back kills from Myers helped the Gophers go up 22-16. A block combo from Myers and Shaffmaster and a kill from Samedy ended the set and the match, 25-17.
