CC McGraw posted a season-best 30 digs

EUGENE, Oregon -- The No. 13 University of Minnesota volleyball team took down the No. 11 Oregon Ducks on Saturday night in Eugene, Ore., 25-21, 23-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-12. Minnesota completed a 2-0 weekend at the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge, taking down two top-15 ranked teams in consecutive days.

The Golden Gophers (3-3, 0-0 Big Ten) were led by sophomore outside Jenna Wenaas, who tallied a career-best 19 kills and 11 digs. Stephanie Samedy had 20 kills and 16 digs while Katie Myers registered nine kills and eight blocks. Defensively, CC McGraw posted a match-best 30 digs while Rachel Kilkelly had 12 to go with three aces.

As a team, Minnesota hit .195 with 63 kills, five aces, 86 digs and 13 blocks. Oregon hit .191 with 64 kills, 51 digs, five aces and nine blocks. Oregon (6-1, 0-0 Pac-12) had six players with five-or-more kills, led by Morgan Lewis with 14.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Through the first media timeout of set one, both teams were hitting .500 and there were 11 ties and seven lead changes. Samedy notched four early kills while Katie Myers played strong out of the middle, tallying kills on three of her four swings. The Gophers led 15-14 at the television break. Oregon eventually tied the game up at 16 before a dump from Shaffmaster but the 'U' up 17-16. Three straight attacking errors from the Ducks gave the Gophers their then-largest lead of the set at 20-16 and caused the home team to call a timeout. Another attacking error from UO and an ace from Shaffmaster continued a 6-0 run for the Gophers, who went up 22-16. A 5-2 run from the home team cut Minnesota's lead to 24-21, but the fifth kill of the set for Samedy closed it out, 25-21. The Gophers hit .467, notching 17 kills and three aces.

Set 2: Rachel Kilkelly started the set off with an ace to get the Gophers going in set two. The two teams remained neck and neck through the first 14 points before a 5-2 Oregon run gave them a 12-9 lead. A kill and a block from Myers brought the Gophers back to within one at 14-13 before a service error put the 'U' down 15-13 at the first media timeout. Another 4-2 run by the Ducks brought their lead up to 19-15 and coach McCutcheon decided to burn his first timeout of the set. Minnesota went down 20-15 but refused to quit, tacking on eight of the next 11 points to tie the set up at 23. Airi Miyabe had a kill and a block to tie it up. UO scored two straight after that, however, to take the set, 25-23. The Gophers hit just .023 for the set but played strong defense with six blocks and holding the Ducks to .135 hitting.

Set 3: Minnesota and Oregon exchanged the first 10 points of the set before a kill from Samedy and a dual block from Husemann and Miyabe gave the 'U' a 7-5 lead. The Ducks bounced right back, however, going on a 6-1 run to take an 11-8 lead and force a Gophers timeout. Oregon would go up by as many as six at 15-9 before a much needed 4-0 run came from the Gophers to slice the lead. Two kills and a block from Myers helped spark the quick spurt and led to a Ducks timeout. Another block from Wenaas brought the 'U' to within one at 15-14 before a 6-1 Ducks run put them back up five at 21-16. They would get no closer, eventually dropping the third set, 25-18.

Set 4: After an early 3-3 tie, Minnesota went on a 6-2 run on the back of kills from Shaffmaster, Wenaas and Samedy, leading to an Oregon timeout. The Gophers would go up 12-6 before a 5-0 run from the Ducks forced a timeout to try and spur the momentum. After another point from UO, the 'U' scored three straight, getting a pair of kills from Miyabe. The Ducks promptly answered with a 5-0 run to take a 17-15 lead. Bayley McMenimen made her first appearance of the season at setter and helped her team go on a 4-0 run of its own after that. Kills from Samedy, Wenaas and Miyabe and an ace from Kilkelly proved timely. Two kills from Wenaas and one from Landfair helped the Gophers hold off UO and take the set, 25-20.

Set 5: The two teams once again exchanged the first six points, but the Gophers responded with a 4-0 run to take firm control of the set. A kill and three straight blocks from Katie Myers spearheaded the run and caused Oregon to take a timeout. UO scored the next two, but the 'U' bounced back with another 4-0 run to go up 11-5. The Ducks closed the gap to as few as two at 14-12, but three kills from Samedy and a finisher from Wenaas sealed the set, 15-12. It was Minnesota's first match to go five sets this season.

Notable:
-Stephanie Samedy (20 kills) moved past the 1,600 (1,610) career kill mark. She still ranks No. 8 all-time at Minnesota. It was her fifth time in six matches with 20-or-more kills this year.
-Jenna Wenaas tallied 19 kills, her fifth time in six matches this season with double digit kills. 19 kills is a season-high for her, topping her 17 from last night.
-CC McGraw had 30 digs, which was a season-high and two off of her career-high.
-Katie Myers tallied a season-best nine kills and eight blocks.
-Bayley McMenimen came off the bench in set four and tallied 13 assists and four digs through the final two sets.
-Rachel Kilkelly led Minnesota with a season-best three service aces. She also tallied 12 digs, another season-high.
