MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota (4-0-3, 0-0-0 B1G) finished its non-conference schedule with an unblemished record after taking out North Dakota 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Sophomore Maddie Baker scored her first career goal and Megan Plaschko secured another clean sheet in the victory over the Fighting Hawks.Â
"I thought we stepped up today and created a lot of good opportunities," head coach Erin Chastain said. "I don't think we were clean enough in front of goal, certainly we are happy with the shutout and happy that they didn't really have any chances to score. Our backs and goalkeeper were very diciplined today. We are happy to end the non-conference with no losses and no goals against. We fully recognize that we are going to have to kick it up a notch with the Big Ten."Â
The undefeated non-conference record is the first for the program since 2008 when the team finished 22-4 and reached the NCAA Tournament Third Round. The Maroon and Gold also posted a seventh-straight shutout and gave Plaschko her sixth individual clean sheet of the season, tied for the most in the country this season with Creighton's Keelan Terrell. Minnesota is one of three programs (Tennessee, Wake Forest) in the nation that have not allowed a goal yet this season.Â
Minnesota fired 17 shots in the first 45 minutes and finally borke through with a goal from Baker in the 41st minute. Baker, who came off the bench, pushed the ball through the goal with her upper body to score the goal after Christa VanLoon sent a cross that Sophia Boman redirected to the middle of the net. For VanLoon, it is her second assist of the season and for Boman it increases her season total in points to five which is the most on the team this season.Â
"It has been great to integrate [Maddie Baker] in the front line," Chastain said. "I said at halftime that [Sadie Harper] and Baker really came off the bench and made an impact for us. They both made good runs and worked hard and Baker made a good run on the goal. Happy for her to get on the score sheet and hopefully that helps her confidence as we move forward."Â
The Gophers first second-half goal this season came in the form of Makenzie Langdok who scored in the 84th minute to ice the match. Langdok's goal is the sixth of her career, the most of any active Gopher, and gives her 14 career points since she joined the program in 2017. Freshman Lauren Donovan earned her first career collegiate point with the assist on Langdok's goal, giving nine different Gophers at least one point this season through the non-conference slate.Â
In the win the Gophers finished with a season-high 32 shots, with seven on goal. Langdok was the individual leader with five shots while Sophia Boman and Patricia Ward also had four each. On the defensive end the Gophers allowed just four shots, with one on goal that Plaschko easily saved.Â
With the non-conference in the rear-view mirror the Gophers will kick off their Big Ten slate with rival Wisconsin at home with a 6 p.m. start time. Last season Minnesota and Wisconsin finished in a 1-1 tie in the annual border battle. The match will be streamed on BTN+ with the Gophers hosting their 'Rock the Robbie' event where tickets will be just $1.Â
