The senior duo each garnered player of the week honors
MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota seniors CC McGraw and Stephanie Samedy were named Big Ten Defensive Player and Big Ten Player of the Week, respectively, the conference announced on Monday.
McGraw spearheaded strong defensive efforts for Minnesota this weekend, averaging 5.44 digs per set and 24.5 digs per match in two victories this weekend over top-15 teams. She led the Gophers in digs in both matches (19, 30). Her 30 digs against Oregon were a season-high and the second highest total in her career. She currently ranks sixth in the conference in digs per set for the year (4.38). This is her third Big Ten Defense Player of the Week award, as she won twice previously in 2019.
A Clermont, Fla., native, Samedy's huge season continued as she tallied 20 kills each in wins over No. 14 Stanford and No. 11 Oregon. She had double doubles in both matches, registering 14 digs vs. Stanford and 16 vs. Oregon. Samedy has totaled 20-or-more kills in five of six matches this year. She leads the Big Ten in kills per set (5.21) and points per set (5.73) and ranks in the top five in the country in both categories. This is Samedy's eighth Big Ten Player of the Week award.
The Gophers (3-3) have played top-15 ranked opponents in five of their six matches this season. They'll complete non-conference play this weekend at the Diet Coke Classic when St. Thomas and Iowa State come to town on Thursday and Sunday. Minnesota moved up two spots in this week's AVCA poll from No. 13 to 11.
