Jenna Wenaas Named Big Ten Player of the Week

She had 14 kills in both matches at the Diet Coke Classic

MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota sophomore outside Jenna Wenaas was named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

The Frisco, Texas native continued her breakout sophomore season in leading the Gophers to two wins at the Diet Coke Classic this past weekend. In two matches, she had 28 kills, four assists, four service aces, 19 digs and eight blocks. Wenaas tallied a match-high 14 kills on 26 swings (.423) in a three-set win over St. Thomas. She also set a new career-best with four service aces, including three in-a-row in the second set. She also added six digs and four blocks against UST.

In Saturday's three set win over Iowa State, Wenaas again led the Gophers in kills with 14 and posted her second career double double with 13 digs.

The sophomore ranks second on Minnesota and eighth in the Big Ten in points (4.26 per set). She also averages 3.26 kills per set and has 101 kills in eight matches in 2021. In her freshman season, Wenaas had 19 kills in 43 sets played. The honor is the first of her career from the Big Ten.

The Gophers (5-3) have played top-15 ranked opponents in five of their eight matches this season. They'll begin Big Ten play on Friday at 8 p.m. CT when Michigan comes to town. The Gophers will also play Maryland on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Pav. Minnesota moved up two spots in this week's AVCA poll from No. 11 to 9.
