Sadie Lindsay joins the Gophers as a right-handed forward from Minnetonka, Minn., and the Breck School.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher women's hockey team welcomes nine newcomers to the team for the 2021-22 season, including Sadie Lindsay, a right-handed freshman forward from Minnetonka, Minn., and the Breck School. Lindsay discusses her relationship with fellow Breck School alumnae Grace Zumwinkle, her hockey-loving family, her dream of playing for the Gophers, and more.
Gopher Sports: How did you first get into hockey?
Sadie Lindsay: My grandpa, my dad, and both my older siblings all played hockey so I grew up in a hockey family. I skated for the first time when I was 3 years old and immediately loved it. I played with the boys for my first few years and then switched to girls, which is where I met all my friends and really started to love competing.
GS: What's your earliest hockey memory?
SL: My earliest memory is playing 1v1 for hours every night against my younger sister Ava on our backyard ice rink when we were really little. We would put our skates on right after we got home from school and wouldn't come back inside until bedtime. That's how I learned my game and that's something we still do to this day!
GS: How do you think your early hockey experience shaped your growth in the sport?
SL: I can't remember a time where I haven't loved playing hockey and I think that's because I had a great experience growing up playing the sport! Playing for Minnetonka and Breck up until this point was such a blast. I love the people I've played with and the programs that I've played for. Since a young age, I've been very driven and self motivated so I think that's helped my growth the most. It's been a great ride so far and I can't wait to see what college brings.
GS: When did you realize that playing Division I hockey was a possibility for you?
SL: I have always wanted to play Division I hockey for the Gophers, but I first learned that it was a future possibility for me in 8th grade after I had just finished playing my first high school hockey season. This was before the rule change so things were definitely happening a lot earlier, but I really enjoyed the recruiting process and loved the people I met along the way! It's a dream come true to be here now.
GS: How did you choose the University of Minnesota?
SL: The University of Minnesota has always been my dream school to play hockey for so it was an easy decision for me! The main factor in my decision was the opportunity to achieve my goals athletically and academically at the highest level in college, and Minnesota offered me both. I love that I get to stay close to home for the next four years as well.
GS: What's your family like? How did they influence your playing career?
SL: I have a big family with five siblings and it's an adventure everyday to say the least. I love having a big family because there's always people around and always something to do! All of my family members play or played hockey so that definitely helped me get into the sport. My family is also very competitive so we love playing any sport against each other and having fun with it.
GS: How would your family describe you?
SL: My family would describe me as confident, kind, competitive, and adaptable. I usually play the oldest child role in my family so I'm sure they would describe me as that, but I never take myself too seriously and love having fun with them!
GS: Did you play any other sports growing up?
SL: I played or tried playing pretty much every sport growing up to become a better athlete in general. I played soccer until I was 13, I played lacrosse for a few years, and I tried gymnastics. I ended up sticking with three main sports, hockey, tennis, and golf, throughout my high school career. Hockey was always my main sport and what I loved to do the most.
GS: What do you like to do in your free time outside of hockey and school?
SL: I love to spend time with my family and friends, especially doing things that involve being active and outside! I love going on the lake as much as I possibly can. I also enjoy playing anything competitive such as pickleball, tennis, or golf.
GS: Is there a hockey player you have admired or looked up?
SL: For as long as I can remember, the person I look up to the most as a hockey player and a person is Grace Zumwinkle. For both high school and college, she's been my captain and she's always taken me under her wing. She's so talented and disciplined and she's like family to me. On top of all of that, she's a great leader and always makes everyone around her feel important, which I respect the most.
GS: Describe your high school hockey experience and winning three state titles.
SL: My high school hockey experience was everything I could have asked for! I was fortunate enough to be a part of three state championship teams which was a really special experience that I'll never forget. I loved playing for a single A school competing against double A schools every game because it made my experience very unique. I was also able to play with my sister for four years and some of my best friends for a few years as well, so that was by far my favorite part.
GS: Describe going to the same college as one of your high school teammates, Emily Zumwinkle.
SL: It's the best! Emily and I have been on the same hockey team since we were 6 years old, so we have been best friends through it all. She's like family to me. I can't remember a time not playing with Emmy. I'm really excited that we get to play together in college and continue this journey, because it has always been a dream for both of us.
GS: Do you know what you want to major in and what career field you're interested in?
SL: I'm not completely sure what I want to major in yet, but I will be attending the College of Biological Sciences. I am really interested in having a career in the medical field so I am going to pursue that and we will see where it takes me. I'm really excited to explore my different options and find out what I really love doing!
GS: What's one part of your game that you're confident in and one part of your game you want to work on more?
SL: Something that I am confident in is my playmaking abilities and IQ on the ice. Something that I will be working on for the next four years is consistently getting faster and stronger in order to keep giving myself a competitive advantage on the ice.
GS: Is there anything in particular that stood out to you about the team or the coaches on your visit that solidified your decision to come to the University of Minnesota?
SL: The deciding factor for me was how the program has a great winning, competitive culture, but also is a family. It's the perfect balance of the two aspects for me, and that was something that really stuck out to me. It's ultimately why I decided to become a Gopher.
