Gophers to Compete in 2021 Gopher Invitational

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team opens up their fall season with the annual Gopher Invitational this weekend at Baseline Tennis Center. The tournament will take place from Sept. 24-Sept. 26. It is free and open to the public.

The Gophers will be hosting five different teams this year. Teams participating in the tournament include Iowa State, Drake, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Gonzaga.

Tournament Format
The tournament will start at 9:00 a.m. each day with two doubles matches and then singles matches to follow. 

Scoring will be best-out-of-three, no-ad scoring with a tiebreaker at 6-6.

Participants
Minnesota will have nine players competing in the Gopher Invitational this weekend. The Gophers have four returners and five newcomers competing in the tournament. Rachel Hanford, who was named unanimous All-Big Ten last season, is entering her sophomore year this weekend. Last spring, she went 12-8 in singles, most wins on the team, and 10-10 in doubles.

Freshmen Maria Rizzolo, Lucy Lu, and Anfisa Danilchenko will be making their debut for Minnesota at the Gopher Invitational. Illinois transfer Emilee Duong and Kansas transfer Vasia Karvouni will also be making their Maroon & Gold debut.

The tournament will be played on both the outdoor and indoor courts, weather permitting. Gophers will have live YouTube streams for the indoor courts at Baseline.
