No. 9 Rutgers Holds on for 2-1 Victory over Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota (5-3-3, 1-3-0 B1G) was unable to pull off the upset of No. 9 Rutgers (8-2-0, 3-0-0 B1G) at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Thursday night, ending in a score of 2-1. McKenna Buisman scored for the Gophers in the loss with Allison Lynch scoring the game-winning goal for the Scarlet Knights.

"Overall I'm proud of our performance," head coach Erin Chastain said. "Rutgers is a top-10 team and they have scored more than 30 goals this season and they have really had their way with their opponents this season. I felt like we matched up really well and we are competitive. After they scored early in the first half we settled down a little bit and were really able to get behind them and generate chances. McKenna scored an awesome goal and she had a great performance for us. Some really positives we can take away but really disappointed we lost."

Rutgers used two early goals in each half to secure the victory over the Gophers. Frankie Tagliaferri scored her eighth goal of the season for the Scarlet Knights when Amirah Ali, who was drafted by the Portland Thorns last year, fed a ball into the box that Tagliaferri tapped past Megan Plaschko

Minnesota, as they have all season, responded when they were down to their opponent. Buisman's goal came in the 30th minute of the first half, dribbling a ball across the top of the box before sending a left-footed strike that hit the left post and into the back of the net. The goal for Buisman is her first of the season and was unassisted, the fourth such goal this season for Minnesota.

The game-winning goal for Rutgers came in the 50th minute when Lynch headed home the go-ahead goal off a set piece feed from Samantha Kroeger.

Plaschko made five saves in the loss, keeping the Gophers in the match as she has all season. All three of the Gophers losses this season have been one-goal defeats with Minnesota not allowing more than two goals this season. The Maroon and Gold out shot the Scarlet Knights 12-10, marking the first time this season Minnesota lost when outshooting their opponents.

Minnesota remains home for a Sunday afternoon matchup with Penn State, the preseason favorite to win the Big Ten. That Oct. 3, match is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen on BTN+.
