Golden Gophers Host No. 25 Hawkeyes on Thursday Night

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota (9-9, 2-4 B1G) remains at home for its second straight contest on Thursday with Iowa (10-4, 4-1 B1G) coming to Williams Arena. The Jan. 20, matchup can be seen on Big Ten Network and streamed online as well as listened to on KFAN+ with Justin Gaard and Lynnette Sjoquist on the call. 

ABOUT THIS GAME
  • Renewing its most-played rivalry, Minnesota hosts Iowa Thursday in the 83rd meeting between the schools. The Gophers trail in the all-time series 55-27.
  • Like with the overall series, Minnesota has faced Iowa at home more than any other team and trails, 17-21, in Minneapolis. The Hawkeyes have won three in a row at Williams Arena with Minnesota's last win in the series coming there on Jan. 21, 2018.
  • Iowa has one Minnesotans on its roster: senior Monika Czinano from Watertown and Watertown-Mayer High School. Czinano's sister, Maggie, is a freshman on the Gophers roster this season. She has appeared in five games.
  • Iowa is 10-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Big Ten. Winners of three straight, the Hawkeyes haven't lost since Jan. 6, at home against Northwestern. Half of Iowa's losses this year have come on the road in games against Duke and then No. 15/13 Iowa State. 
  • Caitlin Clark leads the team with a 25.6 points per game average, while Czinano (19.9) and McKenna Warnock (12.5) are also in double figures. Clark is also averaging a career high 8.2 rebounds per game while Warnock has averaged 7.9 per contest. 
  • As a team, Iowa leads the country in free-throw percentage, making 229-of-264 free throws attempted (.867). The team also ranks in the top 50 in eight additional categories, including second in field goal percentage (.481), seventh in scoring offense (81.9), 11th in assists per game (18.6), 14th in defensive rebounds per game (30.1, 16th in assist turnover ratio (1.21), 27th in free throws made (229), 34th in total assists (260) and 36th in scoring margin (13.9).
     
GOPHER NOTABLES
  • The Golden Gophers are coming off an eight-point loss at home to RV/RV Ohio State (13-3, 5-2 B1G) on Jan. 15. The Gophers got two 20-point performances in the loss with Sara Scalia scoring 23 and Deja Winters scoring 20 while Jasmine Powell also added 17 points and nine assists in her first game back at the Barn in 31 days. Minnesota outscored the Buckeyes in the second and fourth quarters by a combined 15 points, but Ohio State countered by outscoring the Golden Gophers 23 in the first and fourth quarters.
  • Sara Scalia extended her double figures scoring streak to eight with her performance against Ohio State. In her last eight games Scalia has averaged an impressive 19.8 points per game, has shot 45.1 percent from three and has averaged 4.0 made threes per game. This season Scalia ranks 11th in the Big Ten in scoring average (15.7) and is seventh in 3-point percentage at 40.9 percent and is second in threes made per game at 3.0 and has made the second most total threes at 54. 
  • As a team this season Minnesota has the second-best three-point field goal percentage in the Big Ten at 37.9 which is also good enough for 11th best in the NCAA. On average the Maroon and Gold make 8.7 threes per game, good enough for the 25th best mark in the nation and the third best in the conference. In total the team's 157 made threes is the most in the Big Ten and the 10th most in the country. 
  • Jasmine Powell has continued to show the development of her game as a point guard this season. In 16 games the junior guard ranks third in the Big Ten in assists per game at 5.8 and has averaged an impressive 6.4 dimes in her last five games. Her 5.8 assists per game rate is the 17th best in the NCAA this season and currently is the sixth best assists per game rate in program history, just behind head coach Lindsay Whalen's fifth-place mark of 6.2 per game. 
  • Since joining the starting lineup on Dec. 12, vs. Michigan, Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux has pushed her rebounding average significantly up, averaging 5.9 rebounds including an average of 3.7 on the offensive glass. In her last three games Micheaux has picked it up even more with 9.0 rebounds per game, 5.6 of those on the offensive glass. 
  • At home this season Scalia has been Minnesota's top scorer averaging 17.2 points per game, which included a 37-point outing against Ohio (12/15/21) with nine threes made. Jasmine Powell also has performed well at home, averaging 7.0 assists per game in her eight appearances at the Barn, up from her season average of 5.8. 
  • On Dec. 21, head coach Lindsay Whalen was announced as a candidate for the Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2022. Whalen, who is eligible for the first time this year, is on the ballot for her time as a player. After a stellar collegiate career where she led the Maroon and Gold to the Final Four, Whalen collected numerous honors and championships in the WNBA and with the U.S. National team. Finalists will be announced Friday, Feb. 18, in Cleveland, Ohio, during the NBA All-Star Weekend. 
  • Minnesota's four signees in the  2022 signing class were all named McDonald's All-America Games nominees last week. Those future Golden Gophers include Mara Braun (Wayzata, Minn.), Amaya Battle (Hopkins, Minn.), Mallory Heyer (Chaska, Minn.) and Niamya Holloway (Eden Prairie, Minn.).

BY THE NUMBERS
2022 - Since the start of 2022 the Gophers are shooting 43.9 percent (105-of-239) from the floor, better than their rate in 2021 of 41.4 percent (346-of-835)
18 - In her last three games, Deja Winters has averaged 18.0 points per game and has shot 51.8 percent from three.
8 - Sara Scalia has scored in double figures in eight straight games, the second longest streak of her career. 
80 - Under head coach Lindsay Whalen the Gophers have won 80 percent of their games where they lead after the first quarter. This season Minnesota is 9-1 when leading after the opening 10 minutes. 
6 - In 17 games so far this season the Maroon and Gold have had six different starting lineups. 
5 - After Deja Winters' 20-point performance against No. 10/9 Maryland, five different Gophers have scored 20 or more points in a game this season.  

Minnesota heads back on the road for a matchup with Michigan State (9-8, 3-3 B1G) on Jan. 23. The game, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT, can be streamed on B1G+ as well as heard on KFAN+.
