Gopher Defense Steps Up in Second Win over Wisconsin

1/30/2022 4:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota (10-12, 3-7 B1G) defeated Wisconsin (5-15, 2-8 B1G) in dramatic fashion 57-55 on the Big Ten Network on Sunday afternoon. Led by Sara Scalia's 16 points, the Gopher defense clamped down late to hold off the Badgers and earn their second win over the Badgers this season.

After hitting three free throws to put the Gophers up 57-54 with 50.4 seconds left, Wisconsin hit one of two on their next possession to make it a two-point game. Wisconsin got the ball back with 9.0 seconds left, Wisconsin's Sydney Hilliard drove to the hoop where she was met by Deja Winters who swatted away her third block of the day. Wisconsin got the ball back with four seconds left, but Brooke Schramek's layup rolled off the rim and gave Minnesota the two-point win at home.

The game started off slow offensively for the Badgers, missing their first four shots, helping the Gophers build a 7-3 early lead. Wisconsin countered with 10 of the next 14 points to lead 13-11 after the first quarter.

Gadiva Hubbard showed flashes throughout the first half offensively after scoring five points in the first quarter she came back with another three in the second to move into the No. 13 overall spot in the Gopher all-time scoring list, passing Ellen Kramer (1987-91) on a day in which the Gophers honored their alums during halftime. The two teams continued to trade buckets in the second quarter, but two transition buckets late in the half, highlighted by a Laura Bagwell Katalinich fastbreak score, put the Gophers up 28-23 and eventually up 28-25 at the halftime buzzer.

Sara Scalia scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the second half, getting out of the locker room quickly with a three 11 seconds into the second half. The Gophers used a 6-0 run in the middle of the quarter to build a nine-point lead over the visiting Badgers. Wisconsin countered with a run of their own, scoring the next eight points to pull within one.

Down four at the start of the fourth, Wisconsin kept it close throughout much of the fourth quarter with the largest lead being six during the final 10 minutes. The Badgers scored five straight late in the fourth to tie the game up at 54 with 1:14 to go, but Winters down the stretch was too much for the Badgers to overcome at Williams Arena.

Next up for the Gophers is a road matchup with No. 6/6 Indiana (14-2, 6-0 B1G) on Feb. 3, at 6 p.m. CT. The game can be streamed on B1G+ and can also be heard on KFAN+ with Justin Gaard and Lynnette Sjoquist.
