Gophers Open 2022 with Intrasquad Success

Fifth year senior Ona Loper led the University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team in the annual intrasquad meet Friday afternoon, earning the top score on two of the four apparatuses. The Gophers posted a team score of 195.025 for the day.Ā 

"We had some really good routines and we were very excited for the freshmen to get out there," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "We learned a lot and remembered what it felt like to compete in this environment. I am proud of what we have done, but also really looking forward to what we can continue to work on."

Loper finished with an all-around score of 39.500 and was followed by freshman Haley Tyson with a 38.475. Senior Tiarre Sales scored a 38.425 in the all-around and freshman Marissa Jencks added a 38.175.Ā 

"It was great to compete all-around today," Tyson said. "It was my first time in the Pav, so getting that experience and having a great time with my teammates was so fun."

EVENT BREAKDOWN
VAULT
The Gophers competed with seven gymnasts on vault to begin the meet. Loper, who scored two perfect 10s on the event last season, earned the event title with a 9.900. Halle Remlinger followed with a 9.725 and the duo of Marissa Jencks and Kate Grotenhuis added a pair of 9.675s. Tyson rounded out the scoring with a 9.575 to give the Gophers a 48.550 for the opening event.

BARS
A total of 12 gymnasts saw action on bars, with the top five scores combining for a total of 48.950. Lexy Ramler took the highest marks for the Gophers, scoring 9.900 in her season debut. Loper recorded a 9.850 and Remlinger came in a close third with 9.750. Mya Hooten and Hannah Willmarth both claimed their spot in the final total with two 9.725s.

BEAM
Ramler scored a 9.925 on beam to earn her second and final event win of the afternoon. Loper claimed second place with her score of 9.825 and Tyson added a third place finish to her name with a 9.775. Sales totaled a 9.750 and Mallory LeNeave came in fifth after scoring 9.725 in her debut on the event. 10 gymnasts competed on beam and produced a team score of 49.000.

FLOOR
Loper led again on floor with a 9.925, tying the highest single event score on the day. Remlinger was welcomed back to the lineup to earn a 9.850 and staple Emily Koch contributed a 9.650. Jencks was closely behind in fourth place with a 9.600 opening score and Hannah Willmarth closed the books with a 9.500.Ā

Minnesota officially kicks off its season on Monday, January 17th when they welcome UCLA to Maturi Pavilion at 12:00 pm.
