The Gophers hit the road for the first time on Friday before returning home to Ridder Arena on Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team continues their opening stretch of WCHA games with a home-and-home series against Minnesota State. The Gophers first road game of the season takes place at 3:00 pm on Friday before returning home for a 2:00 pm puck drop on Saturday.

Starting with a Sweep
Last weekend, the Gophers kicked off the 2022-23 with a pair of home victories over Bemidji State. Three goal-scorers (Abigail Boreen, Peyton Hemp and Abbey Murphy) recorded a pair of goals for Minnesota in a 6-0 win on WCHA banner night. Senior goaltender Makayla Pahl made all 17 saves for her second-career shutout. Sophomore Skylar Vetter started in goal on Saturday in a 4-1 victory. Lizi Norton, Grace Zumwinkle, Catie Skaja and Emily Oden each lit the lamp for Minnesota.

Scouting the Mavericks
The Mavericks (0-4-0) continue to receive votes in both national polls after starting the season with four consecutive losses. The fifth-place finishers in the 2021-22 WCHA standings open this season with three-straight series against teams ranked in the top five. The start to Minnesota State's schedule includes two one-goal losses to top-ranked Ohio State at home before a 2-0 and 2-1 overtime loss to No. 4/5 Minnesota Duluth.

Up and Down the Lineup
Seven different Gophers recorded goals for Minnesota with twelve total players recording at least one point. Forward Taylor Heise and defender Madeline Wethington led the way for Minnesota with four assists each over the weekend.

Maroon and Gold Firsts
On Saturday, defender Lizi Norton, a fifth-year transfer from Minnesota Duluth, recorded her first goal as a Gopher with a shot from the point early in the first period. Freshmen Josefin Bouveng and Nelli Laitinen each recorded a pair of assists over the weekend – their first NCAA points. Freshman forward Madison Kaiser made her Gopher debut on Friday.

End of the Streak
Minnesota is coming off of a loss to Minnesota State for the first time since 2007. The Mavericks ended a 52-game losing streak against the Gophers with a 5-4 overtime win at Ridder Arena on January 15, 2022. After that loss, Minnesota responded with a 9-1-0 record to close out the regular season with the only loss coming in overtime. The Gophers lead the all-time series 98-4-3.

150 for Zum
Fifth-year forward Grace Zumwinkle recorded her 150th career point (85g-65a) on Saturday with the game-winning goal in the third period. Her 85 goals rank tenth in program history and are two behind Gigi Marvin's 87 goals in ninth place. The team captain is 15 goals away from becoming the sixth Gopher to reach the century mark in program history.

Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
Fifth-year forward Taylor Heise continues to climb the program ranks as Minnesota's active career scoring leader with 164 career points (67g-97a) in 136 career games. Fifth-year forwards Abigail Boreen (41g-51a), Emily Oden (28g-61a) and Catie Skaja (34g-48a) are the closest active skaters to the century mark.

Behind the Bench
Head coach Brad Frost is back for his 16th season as the bench boss of Gopher Women's Hockey. Under Frost's guidance, the program has posted a 444-93-36 record with four national titles and seven conference titles. Natalie Darwitz is back behind the bench for her fourth season as assistant coach and is joined by newly promoted Jessica Scott, who served as the program's Director of Operations for the last three seasons.

Quest for Eighth National Title
Minnesota has won seven national championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and looks for a historic eighth title national crown in 2022-23.
